Take your interest in health, wellness, fitness and nutrition to the next level with an online master's degree focused on students who want careers in nutrition.

The master of science in health sciences with a concentration in nutrition is an online 36-semester hour program.

You will learn:

  • The role of functional foods
  • Macro- and micronutrient metabolism
  • Dietary interventions that prevent and improve chronic diseases
  • Nutrition research methods
  • Leadership and ethics in healthcare

As a graduate, you will be able to formulate research questions, organize and test research problems, and evaluate research study results. You will be able to foster critical thinking, inquiry and professional leadership in the field. Set up your career for advancement with this degree and also engage in a framework for additional advanced degree studies in the future.

This program does not meet the requirements for becoming a registered dietitian (RD). If your interest is to become an RD, please refer to our Master of Science – Coordinated Program. If you have a Didactic Program in Dietetics (DPD) verification statement, you can apply to our Coordinated Program, which includes the MS in Health Sciences degree and supervised practice or you can apply to the Diet To Lifestyle Dietetic Internship program and complete the fully online MS in Health Sciences degree at Georgia State.




Program Details


Prerequisites for students without a DPD verification statement (students who have not completed an undergraduate program in dietetics).

  • Survey or Principles of Chemistry I and II with lab (2 semesters): CHEM 1151K/1152K or CHEM 1211K/1212K or equivalent
  • Microbiology with lab or Organic Chemistry with lab (1 semester): BIOL 2260/2260L or CHEM 2400/2100 or equivalent
  • Human Anatomy and Physiology I and II with lab (2 semesters): BIOL 2251K/BIOL 2252K or BIOL 2107K and BIOL 2108K or equivalent
  • Principles of Nutrition (1 semester): NUTR 2100 or equivalent
  • One course in Anthropology, Psychology or Sociology: ANTH 1102, PSYC 1101, SOCI 1101 or equivalent
  • Coursework in Human Anatomy & Physiology, Nutrition and Chemistry must not be more than 10 years old at the time of admission.

Grade Point Average ≥ 3.0 is required for all coursework completed prior to the application.

Capstone (6 minimum)

Thesis Option: Students will take NUTR 7999 Thesis. A minimum of two semesters at three credits each must be completed. Students must be enrolled in thesis credit each semester they continue to work on completion of the requirements for thesis research and must be registered for thesis in the semester of graduation.

Non-Thesis Options:
Master’s Project – Students will take NUTR 7990 Master’s Project. A minimum of two semesters at three credits each must be completed.

Coursework – Students must take three courses at three credits each. Courses are defined in specialty areas which may include but are not limited to: geriatrics, pediatrics, public health and sports. Students who select the coursework option will be required to take one three credit elective course vs. two.

Comprehensive exam – Students will take NUTR 7500 Comprehensive Examination for three credits in the semester of graduation. Students who select the comprehensive examination option will be required to take one additional three credit elective course.

Successful completion of the M.S. in Health Sciences concentration in Nutrition program will enhance career development for existing practitioners and prepare students for additional advanced degree study.
