How long will it take?

Students are admitted to the program upon completing the freshman and sophomore core courses (60 credit hours) and required program prerequisites. The program is only offered in a full-time format, with a total of 60 credit hours completed across five semesters. This program is cohort-based and is only offered in person, with limited online courses. There are no immediate plans to offer this program part-time or fully online.

Health Informatics, B.I.S.

The Lewis College of Nursing and Health Professions offers a B.I.S. in Health Informatics. The program is a five-semester, full-time course of study beyond the first two years of the undergraduate core curriculum. Students learn the fundamentals of healthcare, information technology, data management and analytics, privacy and security, project management and other concepts applicable to the field of health informatics. Graduates of the BIS in Health Informatics Program will be prepared to pursue entry-level positions in various healthcare organizations, technology companies, government agencies and research organizations. This program is cohort-based and is only offered in-person, with limited online courses. There are no immediate plans to offer this program part-time or fully online.

Due to its professional nature, the program requires that students apply for admission. Student selection is based on prerequisite GPA, consistency of academic performance, grade trends, and interpersonal ability as evidenced in the written personal statement.

Complete the BIS in Health Informatics program application.

The Bachelor of Interdisciplinary Studies in Health Informatics curriculum is a 60-credit-hour, five-semester course of study beyond the first two years of the undergraduate curriculum.

Prerequisites – 42 hours of University Core (Areas A through E/IMPACT). Area F, which includes pre-requisites related to clinical informatics (includes 18 hours that students must complete prior to admission to the BIS in Clinical Informatics).

As goals of the program, a student graduating with a B.I.S. degree in Health Informatics will:

  • Understand the systems and processes associated with health informatics in the areas of clinical informatics, health information technology and health administration management.
  • Be able to analyze and draw relevant conclusions associated with health informatics in the areas of clinical informatics, health information technology and health administration management.
  • Understand the role of and be able to effectively work in the health information, technology and administration industry.
  • Be able to function as an effective member of a successful interdisciplinary healthcare team.
  • Be an effective critical thinker.
  • Be an effective oral and written communicator.

The learning outcomes mean a student graduating with a B.I.S. degree in Health Informatics will:

  • Be able to analyze and evaluate the systems and processes associated with health informatics in clinical informatics, health information technology and health administration management.
  • Demonstrate the ability to effectively function in multifunction teams operating in the field.
  • Present their analysis and evaluations of health information systems and processes as an integrated part of the health information industry and a larger health care system.
  • Use critical thinking in their decision processes.
  • Demonstrate effective oral and written communication skills.
