Georgia State University's Health and Wellness Coach Certificate Program integrates nutrition and health knowledge with counseling skills. This online certificate program will provide a strong nutrition and health coaching background for students and professionals interested in pursuing coaching positions (nutrition and wellness promotion in government agencies and private industries).

  • Students will be taught the different behavior change theories, including motivational interviewing, transtheoretical model, social cognitive theory, and appreciative inquiry in order to support clients and patients in the process of change for improved health and well-being.
  • Students will train and practice using the client-centered approach to help clients engage in self-discovery, goal setting, active learning, and self-monitoring behaviors while maintaining their appropriate scope of practice.

This online certificate program will prepare students for careers in nutrition and health and wellness fields.

Admission Requirements

  • A bachelor’s degree in any field with a minimum overall GPA of 3.0.
  • Official transcripts from all colleges and universities attended
  • A personal statement indicating the applicant’s interest in the program. The statement should be one to two paragraphs describing why you want to be a health coach and if you are interested in working with a specific population.
  • Contact information for two professional references that can be contacted if needed. Applicants will be notified before references are contacted.Reference information:

The Health and Wellness Coaching Post-Baccalaureate Certificate is an 10-credit hour online program of study.  The program consists of at least three courses:

  • NUTR 4500 Health Coaching I
  • NUTR 4550 Health Coaching II
  • NUTR 7200 Nutrition and Disease

The goal of this certificate is to provide student's with the knowledge and skills needed to effectively initiate, manage, and end coaching sessions with a diverse client population.

Learning Outcomes:

  • Organize and guide a coaching session from beginning to end using appropriate coaching
  • Apply appropriate responses to clients to reflect understanding and compassion (Reflective statements, Affirming statements, etc.)
  • Differentiate a client's readiness to explore a health and well-being vision and adjust coaching appropriately.
  • Accurately and appropriately incorporate health information into coaching sessions while staying within the scope of practice.
  • Demonstrate knowledge of professional conduct and code of ethics
    1. Show competence in legal factors of coaching, including confidentiality, HIPAA, and licensure
    2. Understand and show competence in the scope of practice
    3. Identify and make appropriate referrals for services outside of your scope of practice

 

These outcomes focus both on the cognitive and psychomotor objectives. The Health and Wellness Coaching Post-Baccalaureate Certificate Program focuses on teaching students to apply concepts early in the program so that they will be proficient in incorporating different counseling theories into their practice.
