Program Description: This course will provide a historical, cultural and sociopolitical perspective of health and wellness in the Dominican Republic (DR). Students will increase their knowledge of different cultures, health care and differing health care systems. Within this context, students will focus on individuals’ health, the health of the communities in which they live, and how the health of the community impacts the health of the individual. Students will observe the practice of health and wellness with the goal of improving health at the individual and population levels, through the emphasis on health promotion, disease prevention and health and wellness education. The study abroad setting will help Georgia State University students gain valuable global community health and wellness experience through supervised observation in community clinics and provision of health education in a public health fair in a DR community. Students will learn about the challenges of DR healthcare during interactive discussions with healthcare providers.

Program Description: The purpose of this program is to increase global clinical competency of students by analyzing the benefits and barriers of living with a health condition in Dominican Republic. Students will interface with local community partners addressing health and environmental needs of community members. They will apply evidence-based practice with the goal of improving health at the levels of the individual and family system, through an emphasis on occupational performance, health and wellness, prevention, and health literacy. Additional service opportunities may include home modifications and community-based health promotion projects based on current needs of families and the community.

Ghana, Africa - Nursing

Program Description: The purpose of this program is to identify the complex challenges of social determinants of health on local communities abroad and prepare future leaders for developing effective solutions. Students will be able to discuss the intersection of social, economic, and environmental determinants of health and the way these determinants shape access to health care, water, sanitation, and food.

New Delhi and Kolkata, India

Program Description:In this study-abroad course, we will visit a well known public rehabilitation clinic in New Delhi, India as well as a Non-Governmental Organization in Kolkata that runs a clinic and housing for adolescents with psychosocial issues. We will examine cross-cultural programming aimed at addressing health and wellbeing for at-risk, underserved, and marginalized populations with mental health issues. We will develop an understanding of the occupational therapy process in India and compare that process in the USA to gain an understanding of the health care delivery system in both countries. We will also take an in depth cultural/architectural tour of New Delhi and Kolkata and understand how these two metropolis shaped India over the last several centuries.
