From the Chair
Welcome to the Department of Occupational Therapy within the Byrdine F. Lewis College of Nursing and Health Professions at Georgia State University. Our entry-level Occupational Therapy Doctorate (OTD) program is now fully accredited with zero deficiency and is steadfast in its dedication to educating and equipping aspiring occupational therapists for influential roles as exemplary clinicians, educators, and researchers in healthcare, particularly in the realms of prevention and rehabilitation.
We now also offer a Doctor of Philosophy (Ph.D.) degree in Health Sciences with a concentration in occupational therapy. Our distinguished faculty, with education and experience, garnered from top-tier institutions nationally and internationally, foster a diverse and stimulating learning environment for both OT and non-OT majors interested in advanced study of older and pediatric populations, assistive and rehabilitative technologies, accessible and universal design, cognitive processes, and community living.
Nestled in downtown Atlanta, our location grants students access to the abundant resources of Georgia State, as well as unparalleled connections to the city’s business, government, nonprofit, and cultural sectors. Close collaborations with prominent area healthcare facilities and community organizations offer students unique learning opportunities with clinician instructors in a genuine clinical setting. Additionally, our department provides a wide array of carefully vetted clinical placements to enrich our students' hands-on experiences.
Both OTD and Ph.D. programs at Georgia State University provide innovative education, research opportunities, and collaborative ventures that underscore the pivotal role of occupation in human potential and health. At Georgia State OTD, we empower students to practice with authenticity, compassion, and care by integrating their identity with their professional roles.
Through skillful practice and scholarly endeavors, students address the intricate dynamics that either impede or facilitate individuals' access to and engagement in meaningful, health-promoting occupations in an environment where students can thrive, uncovering the intricacies of the art and science of occupational therapy research, practice, and education. Our graduates become ethical, visionary leaders who anticipate the evolving occupational needs of diverse populations, communities, and individuals, proactively addressing those needs through innovation, scholarship, and contributing to the growth of occupational therapy locally and globally.
Highlights of the Georgia State Occupational therapy programs are characterized by a) engagement in the vibrant and highly diverse urban community of Atlanta, b) innovative real-world simulation and practice experiences in traditional and non-traditional settings, c) a strong commitment to research and scholarship with a focus on technology in occupational therapy, d) an occupation-centered curriculum formulated by a diverse team of educators, scientists, and practitioners, and e) unique opportunities for expanding our research and partnerships with premier departments at Georgia State, Georgia Tech, and Emory University. You could add: ongoing and growing study abroad programs in India, the Dominican Republic, and Belgium; student-driven research and capstone projects; and a highly diverse student body in both OT and GSU.
We invite you to use this website as a guide through our OTD program and encourage you to reach out with any questions about our program or the profession.
