Dr. Regena Spratling, associate dean & chief academic officer for nursing, is being inducted as a Fellow of the American Academy of Nursing. Induction into the Academy is significant in a nurse leader’s career as their colleagues honor their accomplishments. Fellows are selected based on their contributions and impact to advance the public’s health.
Congratulations to Lauren Newhouse, an undergraduate nursing student named the 2021-2022 Breakthrough to Nursing Director for the National Student Nurses’ Association (NSNA). Newhouse represents Georgia State in the National Student Nurses Association and will work to increase recruitment and retention of underrepresented diverse groups within the nursing profession by promoting career opportunities in nursing and aiding nursing education.
Nursing students are gaining valuable experience as they assist the university’s Student Health Clinic in administering 500 doses of the COVID-19 vaccine to the university’s eligible faculty and staff. As health care workers on the front lines, the students also vaccinated themselves and their classmates.
Meet Tony Smith chair of the Georgia State University Byrdine F. Lewis College of Nursing and Health Professions’ board of advisors. A double Panther, Smith shares his years of nursing expertise with not one but two Atlanta-area universities. In addition to working with the Lewis College board, he teaches and coordinates the R.N. to B.S.N. degree program at Mercer University’s Georgia Baptist College of Nursing.
Under normal circumstances, Georgia State nursing students go to a hospital or other medical facility for practical experience, called clinical. But thanks to the COVID-19 pandemic, students instead sign on to clinical experience via video conferencing. They participate in this virtual experience that allows them to interact with patients as if the patients lay in a hospital bed.
Two nursing alumni represent the Byrdine F. Lewis College of Nursing and Health Professions in the Georgia State University Alumni 40 Under 40 Class of 2019. Ashley Blackmon and Dustin Hillis, nominees to the second annual 40 Under 40 class, share a background in critical care nursing and civic advocacy.
Dr. Regena Spratling has been named the Associate Dean and Chief Academic Officer for Nursing. Dr. Spratling, who is an associate professor and has been on the Georgia State faculty since 2012, takes over leadership of the school from Dr. Susan Kelley.
Stephan Davis, clinical assistant professor of nursing, plays holiday music on his saxophone for visitors to Atlanta’s Grady Hospital during December. An accomplished performer and composer, Davis enjoys delighting young and old alike with musical healing his performances sponsored by The Serenbe Institute for Art, Culture and the Environment.
