Makayla Wright
- Where are you from?
Covington, GA. - What do you like to do outside of school? What are you passionate about in life? - tell us about yourself!
Outside of school I love to travel and stay active. Whether it’s going to the gym, going on a hike, or visiting a new place. I am passionate about all things related to health and helping others be the healthiest version of themselves. This is one of the reasons why proper Nutrition is such an important topic to me because of how vital it is in keeping our bodies regulated. I am also passionate about the education aspect of health-related concepts and empowering others with the tools and knowledge for optimal health. - Why did you choose to study nutrition? Was there a specific person, experience, or event that sparked your interest?
Before I started college, I had a very narrow view on the path that I wanted to take to medical school because I wasn’t aware of the different routes. However, after seeing my grandfather recover from congestive heart failure after drastically changing his diet, I became more intrigued with how food impacts our health. I started to do more research and saw that the GSU Nutrition Science Program would allow me to learn more about Nutrition while still being able to take pre-med prerequisites and thought it was the perfect route for me. - What made you choose the B.S. in Nutrition program at GSU?
Ultimately it came down to the flexibility of the program and what made the most sense for me. Nutrition is extremely important, especially when it comes to our health so I thought it would be great to be able to combine both of my interest in Nutrition and Medicine in Undergrad. Prior to the program, I didn’t know how much it would transform me as a person but now that I am about to graduate, I can honestly say it was one of the best decisions for me. - What is your favorite thing about GSU’s nutrition program?
Choosing just one favorite thing about GSU’s Nutrition program would be very hard. I love how intimate the classes are and how much the professors genuinely care about the students. I’ve never taken a major class and felt unsupported or confused. All of the professors are amazing and very knowledgeable about various topics. I also love that I can directly apply what I am learning in my classes to my personal life. - Are you involved in any nutrition-related experiences (research, other projects), or volunteering, outreach, or student organizations? If so, please tell us a bit about them.
Yes, I am a member of the Nutrition Student Network (NSN) at GSU, by far one of my favorite organizations on campus. From 2019-2020, I served as the gardener for NSN where our goal was to produce food for Panther’s Pantry (a pantry for GSU students dedicated to decreasing food insecurity on campus). In 2020-2021, I served as the President for NSN where I was truly able to define what leadership is and how to lead an organization properly. NSN has opened many doors for me and has fostered me into becoming the best leader that I can be. Regardless of someone’s major, I highly encourage them to join and learn more about NSN because the opportunities are endless. - Where do you see yourself after graduating with your B.S. in Nutrition? Are you planning to go to graduate school? What type of career would you like to have?
After graduating with my B.S in Nutrition, my goal is to apply to medical school to become a Physician. The kind of specialty I plan to pursue is still being determined but I would love to be able to incorporate my knowledge on Nutrition in whatever I decide to do. - If you could give advice to someone considering studying nutrition, what would you tell them?
Advice I would give to someone considering studying Nutrition would be to go for it and make the most of your experience. Nutrition is a very practical major that will not only impact you directly, but also everyone around you. Deciding to major in Nutrition has been one of the best decisions of my life and it has changed my daily habits. Take every class seriously and strive to do the best that you can in every moment. As you explore Nutrition, try not to put yourself in a box. There are so many pathways that you can take with this major so do not allow preconceived notions deter you away from studying this amazing major.
