Four occupational therapy faculty from the Byrdine F. Lewis College of Nursing and Health Professions will give nine presentations during the 98th American Congress of Rehabilitation Medicine (ACRM). The conference, held virtually in 2021, is the largest globally to focus on rehabilitation research. (See schedule below.)
Sutanuka Bhattacharjya, assistant professor, will co-present challenges of implementing telerehabilitation and evidence-based strategies to increase adoption and improve implementation experiences. She will co-present on a separate symposium and speak about disproportional risks, consequences, and vulnerabilities experienced by people with disabilities during the COVID-19 pandemic and a model for disability-inclusive responses that can be used by public health authorities and policy makers.
Dr. Bhattacharjya also receives the ACRM Diversity Complementary Integrative Rehabilitation Medicine (DCIRM) Mentoring & Career Development Fellowship, given to junior researchers from minority and underrepresented backgrounds.
Jade Gross, clinical assistant professor, shares her expertise for rehabilitation professionals working with refugees, a topic particularly relevant as the United States welcomes scores of Afghan refugees.
Veronica Rowe, assistant professor, focuses her research on stroke recovery and rehabilitation. She will moderate a symposium on collaboration to advance stroke recovery research. Dr. Rowe will also present on upper extremity assessments during an instructional course involving interdisciplinary perspectives of functional measurement and assessment of the stroke survivor. She will chair the Stroke Special Interest Group meeting.
Pey-Shan Wen, assistant professor, co-presents a scoping review on applying complementary integrative practices in rehabilitation for people with traumatic brain injury. She also presents with the ACRM measurement taskforce on measurement validity in rehabilitation research. Additionally, she is a co-author of a presentation about the attitude toward integrative health practices among rehabilitation professionals.
The ACRM has over 3,000 members in 65 countries and attracts researchers from a variety of disciplines, all aimed at improving the lives of people with disabilities.
